(WKBN) – A dog food that has been sold in Pennsylvania and other states has been recalled due to salmonella concerns, according to the FDA.
Blue Ridge Beef, a company out of North Carolina, is recalling its 2-pound log Puppy Mix due to salmonella contamination. It has a lot #08/06/N25 & 08/16/N25 and is under UPC 854298001696.
According to the FDA, salmonella can affect animals eating the products, and there is a risk to humans from handling contaminated pet products, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after touching them. The FDA encourages pet owners to wash and sanitize their hands after handling recalled food or any utensils that come in contact with recalled food.
Reports said the problem was discovered when a customer’s litter of puppies became sick and reported the issue to the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. On November 27, the FDA told the firm that these products tested positive for salmonella.
The products were packaged in clear plastic and distributed between August 6-August 23, 2024.
The FDA said pets with salmonella infections may be tired and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever and vomiting. The agency said some pets will have only decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. Reports said infected but otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and infect other animals or humans. The FDA asks that owners of infected pets contact their veterinarians.
The FDA said healthy people infected with salmonella should monitor themselves for symptoms like nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever. Salmonella can also cause more serious issues in humans like arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation and urinary tract symptoms. People exhibiting these signs after having contact with this dog food should contact their healthcare providers.
People who have purchased this product are urged to return to the place of purchase or destroy the food in a way that children and animals cannot access. People are asked to not feed the food to their pets and to sanitize all pet food bowls.
